What to Look Forward to in Historical Dramas In 2018
They say history is written by the victors. You will find many tales telling the biographies and true events from the victor’s point of view. But, what about the story of the losing end? We don’t find many stories of heroes who lost the battle. There is not much evidence of what happened to the Kalingas, after they lost to Asoka, or about what happened to Troy after the Trojan War. So when we try to tell the story of the hero who lost the battle, there will always be some imagination and some dispute regarding the true events. In 2018, we have movies which tell the story of heroes who were lost in battle though they fought valiantly. You can catch the movies as and when they release with Ticket new Bookings. One such movie is the much touted Padmavati. We have all heard about the controversy about the right wing activists objecting to the scenes between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji. They blame the movie director of hurting the sentiments of Rajputs, as no such meeting could have taken place due to the strict pardah system they followed. Since we have no accounts of what happened to the rajputs after they lost, the director has taken creative liberties to tell the story.
Apart from this controversy, the movie is a visual extravaganza with lavish sets, amazing war sequences, and great visual effects. But what stands out the most is the jewelry and costume designs for this movie. Designers Rimple and Harpreet Narula have researched and used only materials, styles and designs that were true to that era. The costume of Padmavati weighs more than 20 kg. Similar effort went into the costumes of Maharawal Ratan Singh and Alauddin Khilji. Even the location of the movie is of great historical significance. The Chittorgarh Fort is a UNESCO heritage site and is one of the largest fort complexes in India.
Another movie that is set to release in April is Manikarnika- The Queen Of Jhansi. This movie is the story of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi. Her story is known to all Indians of all ages. She was one of the earliest rulers to oppose British Raj in India. She fought valiantly and cleverly to the bitter end. She might have lost the battle with the British, but her legacy and bravery have endured through the decades. It is said that this courageous and brave queen, was highly skilled in armed combat and did not shy away from going to war herself. She, in fact tied her baby to her back and fought away the British soldiers for the longest time, before succumbing to injury. The movie stars Kangana Ranaut as The Rani Of Jhansi.
Another movie that is set to release in the latter half of 2018 is Taanaji- The Unsung Hero. It is the tale of Subedar Tanaji Malusare, who was a Maratha warrior in the army of Chhatrapathi Sivaji. The movie stars Ajay Devgn as Tanaji.
Thugs Of Hindostan is another movie that tells the tales of a group of pirates, who landed in India long before independence. It might not be a story of heroes, but it is a period drama which stars Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Katrina Kaif in main roles.
We have many more such period dramas and historical movies coming up in the New Year. You also have a Tamil movie Sangamithra, which tells the story of the warrior princess Sangamithra. Another one is Sons OfSardaarand Battle of Saragarhi.
